Safety Precautions When Using Microwave Ovens

Maybe you’re worried regarding the rumors that microwave ovens are hazardous. These rumors are, actually, unfounded. As yet, no connection between microwaves and cancer or any other disorder has been proven. Even the late 1980s study, which in fact sparked off many of the safety worries, was not decisive. Even though there are certain safe practices that you need to be aware of in using any microwave oven, the conclusion of experts is that they are basically harmless.

Microwaves Do Not Cause Cancer

Using a microwave oven has never caused anyone to be afflicted by cancer, or any other illness. Warming liquids in a microwave container with a smooth surface can result in overheating. Paradoxically, they may well rise to a temperature above boiling point without actually boiling. When you disturb the fluid by adding other materials or by moving the container, they can begin to boil violently. Severe scalding can result from the sudden burst of water and steam this generates. Even though you might have heard that this only occurs to distilled water, microwaves can actually superheat other liquids, like coffee or tea.

Be Sure Egg Shells are Pierced

Some other foodstuffs can be dangerous, as well. Containers that aren’t suitably ventilated, or foodstuffs with a shell or skin, such as eggs and potatoes, can burst in a microwave. Steam can accumulate inside these foods or containers, with no means to escape, resulting in an explosion. Sooner or later, the build-up of pressure may cause the food to burst. This normally leads to a big mess and maybe burns. Foodstuffs that have been warmed up for long periods of time can also catch fire.

Microwaves and Metal Do Not Go Together

That metal should never be placed into a microwave is common knowledge. When the metal in the object resonates, an electric charge can ensue, resulting in arcing electricity or sparks. Microwaving a takeout box with a metal handle, or a twist tie that has a wire inside, can cause fires. Be careful to remove any metal from your microwave before using it, to avoid the possibility of fire.

Other Things to Be Aware Of

A microwave with nothing inside it should never be switched on. Running your microwave with no food inside to soak up the radiation will cause the formation of a standing wave inside. This energy will be reflected between the tube and the cooking chamber, and may well burn out your microwave. By the same token food that has been dried out or is inside a metal wrapper must never be microwaved. Rather than soaking up the wave, these materials will reflect it.

Foods that aren’t arranged correctly can also lead to arcing. Grapes are an example of this. Fire inside the microwave will also produce a spark of electricity – never put anything that’s burning inside your microwave. All foods should be cautiously handled, even when they don’t look hot. Liquids are especially dangerous, but all foods can be warmer than they appear. You’ll have no problem producing safe, flavorsome food with your microwave, as long as you treat it with care. So, the bottom line is that you may prepare meals with a microwave oven with the knowledge that it will present no hazards when used correctly. Just do not forget that microwaves require a few special precautions, the same as any other cooking method.
